NaNoWriMo Update

We are now nineteen days into NaNoWriMo – which stands for National Novel Writing Month – where writers pledge to write 50,000 words during the month of November.

My word count – at close of play yesterday was just under 40,000. As with previous years, I haven’t worked on just one project. My ‘NaNo’ file looks really messy because I’ve been playing with lots of ideas. I’ve added ideas to three different novels, jotted brief outlines for four magazine stories, added information to the synaesthesia book I’ve been working on and some research notes for a poetry and flash fiction collection I intend to publish next year. It will probably take ages to sort the bits out, but I feel a real tingle of excitement about everything in that file – a bit like a kid in a sweetshop not knowing which one to pick first.

It isn’t too late to join in the fun. There is no pressure to do the full 50,000 words – even if you did 5,000 new words it could lead to something magical.

Whatever you decide to do, just aim to do a bit extra this month. Look on it as money in the bank. You might be glad of those words at some time in the future.

I’ve also set up a reward system – I give myself £5 for each 5,000 words completed. When I have completed the full amount I will go shopping!
